At Virtual Academy, our TK–5 program focuses on building strong academic foundations while keeping young learners engaged through a blend of digital learning and hands-on activities.

Building Strong Foundations

Our early elementary curriculum prioritizes the core skills students need to succeed:

• Reading and literacy development

• Writing and communication skills

• Foundational mathematics and problem solving

These core subjects form the basis for confident, independent learners.

Standards-Aligned Instruction

Students learn through district-approved curriculum and teacher-led instruction that aligns with Common Core State Standards (CCSS). This ensures that Virtual Academy students meet the same academic expectations as their peers in traditional classrooms.

Hands-On Learning Materials

In addition to digital lessons, students receive physical learning materials to support their education at home. These may include:

• Writing journals

• Academic workbooks

• Printed books to build a home library

These materials help reinforce learning through hands-on practice.

Engaging Digital Tools

Our teachers use interactive tools to keep young learners engaged and motivated, including:

• IXL for skill development and practice

• Peardeck for interactive lessons and participation during live sessions

These tools help students stay actively involved in their learning.

Success in TK–5 relies on strong collaboration between teachers, students, and families. Our program is designed to support students through structured lessons and family partnership.

The Learning Coach Partnership

Each student is supported by an At-Home Learning Coach, usually a parent or guardian, who helps guide their daily learning.

Learning Coaches help students:

• Stay on track with assignments and schedules

• Navigate online lessons and activities

• Encourage strong study habits and independence

This partnership between teachers and families is essential to student success.

Structured Online Instruction

Students participate in live, teacher-led lessons that combine:

• Whole-group instruction

• Small-group support

• Independent practice

This balanced approach provides both structure and flexibility for young learners.

Orientation and Learning Agreement

Before starting the program, families participate in an in-person orientation and sign a Learning Agreement. This ensures that both the school and family understand their roles and expectations for supporting the student’s learning journey.

Technology Support

Virtual Academy ensures students are equipped for success by providing:

• 1:1 student devices (Chromebooks)

• Hotspot

• Dedicated technology support to assist families with any technical challenges

Even in a virtual environment, students remain connected to a vibrant school community through enrichment activities, events, and social support.

In-Person Field Trips

TK–5 students participate in at least two field trips each year, providing opportunities for hands-on learning and social connection. Past trips have included visits to locations such as the zoo and other educational sites.

Positive School Culture (PBIS)

Virtual Academy builds a strong school culture using PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports).

Students learn positive expectations such as “Owl-Ways Be Safe” and can earn points through the PBIS Rewards platform for:

• Prizes

• School recognition

• Fun school swag

Social-Emotional Support

Student well-being is a priority. Instructional sessions often begin with intentional check-ins that help teachers connect with students and support their emotional well-being.

Families also have access to the on-campus Wellness Room, which offers counseling and stress-reduction support.

Clubs and Enrichment Activities

Students can participate in clubs and enrichment opportunities that allow them to explore interests, build friendships, and feel connected to their school community.
