Curriculum and Academics (Grades 6–8)

Our Grades 6–8 program is designed to prepare students for high school by building independence, strong study habits, and academic confidence through a structured, blended learning model.

Core Instructional Model

Core Academics: Edmentum Curriculum
All core academic courses are delivered through the Edmentum Online Program, a rigorous, standards-based curriculum aligned with California Common Core State Standards and the district’s scope and sequence.

Students work through their core subjects at their own pace, developing essential skills in time management, organization, and independent learning.

Blended Learning Environment

Students experience a balance of independent online learning and live teacher support. This model allows students to take ownership of their learning while still receiving guidance and instruction from credentialed teachers.

Students participate in:

• Self-paced Edmentum coursework (core subjects)
• Live teacher-led electives
• Math and writing support sessions
• Small-group instruction for targeted academic support

Targeted Academic Support

Additional academic support is built into the program to ensure all students can succeed:

• Support classes for students needing additional help in Math or English Language Arts
• Daily Math intervention for students requiring foundational skill development
• Ongoing teacher monitoring and individualized support during live sessions

Student Support and Learning Structure (Grades 6–8)

Success in Grades 6–8 is built on a strong partnership between students, families, and teachers. As students grow in independence, they continue to receive the support and structure needed to stay on track.

The Learning Coach Partnership

Each student is supported by an At-Home Learning Coach, typically a parent or guardian, who plays an important role in their success.

Learning Coaches help students:

• Monitor progress and stay on track with assignments
• Support organization and time management
• Encourage independence and accountability

Blended Instruction and Support

Students experience a balance of independent learning and teacher support, including:

• Self-paced online coursework through Edmentum
• Live teacher-led sessions (electives, math, and writing support)
• Small-group instruction for additional guidance

This structure allows students to build independence while still receiving targeted support.

Orientation and Learning Agreement

Before beginning the program, families attend an in-person orientation and sign a Learning Agreement. This ensures clear expectations and a shared commitment to student success.

Technology Support

Virtual Academy provides the tools students need to succeed:

• 1:1 student devices (Chromebooks)
• Internet hotspot access (if needed)
• Ongoing technical support for families

Even in a virtual environment, students remain connected to a vibrant school community through enrichment activities, events, and social support.

In-Person Field Trips

TK–5 students participate in at least two field trips each year, providing opportunities for hands-on learning and social connection. Past trips have included visits to locations such as the zoo and other educational sites.

Positive School Culture (PBIS)

Virtual Academy builds a strong school culture using PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports).

Students learn positive expectations such as “Owl-Ways Be Safe” and can earn points through the PBIS Rewards platform for:

• Prizes

• School recognition

• Fun school swag

Social-Emotional Support

Student well-being is a priority. Instructional sessions often begin with intentional check-ins that help teachers connect with students and support their emotional well-being.

Families also have access to the on-campus Wellness Room, which offers counseling and stress-reduction support.

Clubs and Enrichment Activities

Students can participate in clubs and enrichment opportunities that allow them to explore interests, build friendships, and feel connected to their school community.
