Work Permits

A work permit is a legal document required in California for individuals under 18 years of age to be employed. To obtain a work permit, you can visit Mrs. Chambers in room SE-3 on campus. Please note that you must secure a job before you can apply for a work permit.

• Click and download the Work Permit Application (Statement of Intent to Employ a Minor and Request for a Work Permit).
  • Note: if you get this filled out and do not meet the GPA or attendance requirements, a work permit will not be issued.  If you are unsure what your last GPA was in your grading period, please contact Mrs. Chambers via email or by calling the school office at (909) 888-0763 to reach her.
• Fill out your personal information (Minor’s Information) at the top of the application, have the employer fill out the information required in the bottom portion (To be filled in and signed by the employer), and have your parent/legal guardian sign the middle portion of the application. Mrs. Chambers will fill in the School Information. 
• Please email a picture of the completed work permit application to Mrs. Chambers, who will check and process the Work Permit:  josephine.chambers@sbcusd.k12.ca.us. 
• If you meet all the requirements, Mrs. Chambers will schedule an appointment to meet with you to receive the Work Permit.
• Bring the completed work permit back to your employer.

To have a permit issued during the school year, you must maintain at least a 2.0 GPA in your most recent grading period. For summer employment, this GPA requirement is not enforced; however, it will apply in the fall, so be sure to keep your grades up!

REMINDER: WHILE YOU ARE IN SCHOOL: Grades need to be at a C or higher with a 2.0 GPA. You are required to attend classes and turn in your work (stay on pace!). You are required to attend your 1:1 Meetings with your Advisory teacher.

Yes, a work permit can be canceled at any time by a high school administrator. Additionally, a work permit can be revoked at a parent's request if there is a valid reason. Valid reasons for canceling a work permit include: the job does not meet legal requirements, the scheduled hours are causing truancy or absenteeism issues for the student, or the job is negatively impacting the student's academic performance

A minor is required to obtain a work permit for each job they hold. A work permit becomes invalid, or expires, when a minor quits or leaves a job. Consequently, a new work permit application must be completed for each new job.

In California, all work permits expire five days after the opening of school in the fall. This policy ensures that all minors return to school before resuming work after summer vacation. For example, if a minor obtained a job and a work permit in June and continued in that same job in September, the work permit would still expire in September. The minor would need to obtain a new work permit for the new school year, even though it is for the same job they held previously.

Minors ages 12 through 17 are required to get work permits before starting a job. A minor under the age of 12 cannot receive a work permit except in the entertainment industry. There are a few exceptions to these rules. No work permit is required for the following jobs: (1) certain agricultural industry jobs, (2) odd jobs in private homes such as gardening and babysitting, (3) newspaper delivery jobs, and (4) self-employment.
