Alternative Learning Center

Welcome to our Alternative Learning Center (ALC), an Independent Study school for 4th to 12th grade students. Students of ALC are current students of San Bernardino City Unified School District.

Independent Study is an alternative instructional strategy for students whose learning style, interests, needs, and aptitudes are best accommodated outside the regular classroom setting. Our supportive staff works closely with parents and students to provide an excellent education for each student. A student's success is based on personal motivation, parental/adult support, and assistance.

Referral Process

Students interested in ALC must be currently enrolled in SBCUSD.
Parents/Guardian meets with the student's current school administrator to determine if Independent Study is an appropriate alternative educational option.
Parent/Guardian adds student(s) to the Virtual Academy waitlist, identifying their interest in ALC.
If the student is in special education, an IEP meeting is required with an ALC staff member in attendance before making a referral.
School personnel may only accept the parent's request if the student demonstrates the ability to be successful in the program.

Intake Appointment

The intake appointment is held at the ALC office on the Virtual Academy campus.
Both student(s) and parent/guardian must be present.
A valid form of identification must be presented by the parent/guardian.
The student's academic history and current grades will be reviewed.
Rules and guidelines for Independent Study will be discussed, and a master agreement will be signed.
The master agreement includes information on the classes assigned, meeting dates and times, and the responsibilities of both the parent/guardian and the student.

Attendance at ALC

Student attendance is based on the time and quality of work completed and turned in to the teacher each week.
Weekly appointments are assigned by grade level, class, and teacher.
Students must complete approximately 30 hours of productive school work at home weekly.
Work is assigned by a valid California teaching credential teacher aligned to the District's scope and sequence for all classes.
Failure to attend the mandatory weekly meeting may result in removal from the program. If the student needs to be more successful in Independent Study, the student will be returned to their referring school.
If the student is absent on their scheduled weekly meetings, it is the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian to bring the school work to the teacher and pick up new assignments.
Parent/Legal Guardian must call in the student's absences, and missed appointments must be rescheduled.
