How Enrollment Works

Referral Process

 

1. Confirm Eligibility
The student must be currently enrolled in SBCUSD.

2. Meet with the School Administrator
The parent/guardian meets with the current school to determine whether Independent Study is appropriate.

3. Join the Waitlist
Parent/guardian adds the student to the Virtual Academy waitlist and selects ALC.

4. Complete Additional Requirements
If applicable, an IEP meeting is held with ALC staff before referral.

5. Final Review
Student placement is based on readiness and ability to succeed in the program.

Intake Appointment

 

1. Attend Appointment
The intake meeting takes place at the ALC office on the Virtual Academy campus. Both the student and parent/guardian must be present.

2. Bring Identification
Parent/guardian must provide a valid form of identification.

3. Academic Review
The student’s academic history and current grades will be reviewed.

4. Review Expectations
Staff will explain the rules and guidelines for Independent Study.

5. Sign Agreement
A learning agreement will be signed outlining assigned courses, meeting schedules, and the responsibilities of both the student and parent/guardian.

Weekly Expectations

  • Attendance is based on work completed and submitted each week
  • Weekly appointments are assigned by the teacher and grade level
  • Students complete approximately 30 hours of schoolwork weekly

Instruction & Requirements

  • All coursework is assigned by a credentialed California teacher
  • Instruction follows district scope and sequence
  • Attendance to seekly meetings are required

Parent Responsibilities

  • Coordinate assignment pickup if a student misses a meeting
  • Ensure work is completed and submitted on time
  • Report absences and reschedule missed appointments
