The Referral Process

The Alternative Learning Center (ALC) provides instruction through independent study to 1st through 12th grade students enrolled in the San Bernardino City Unified School District. (Students wishing to enroll at the ALC must be enrolled in the District). The school in which the student is enrolled is required to do the referral to independent study. Prior to the school making a referral to the ALC, parents and students are encouraged to call for information about the program. If you would like your student to attend, make an appointment with your school administrator to discuss the appropriateness of the placement for your child. (Unfortunately, if your student has attendance problems and you are currently in the SARB disciplinary process you cannot be referred to independent study until the attendance issues are resolved.) The school will complete the request form and attach additional information of attendance, grades, immunizations, and other documentation as needed. The referring staff will call the ALC to set a time for an Intake appointment or a qualification test.

In order for a student to be eligible for independent study, they must exhibit the skills necessary to be an independent learner. Students must continue to attend their home school until the intake meeting and their contract is signed for enrollment in independent study.

Intake appointments are scheduled for Monday, and Wednesday through Friday. They generally take 90 minutes. Both the student and the parent\guardian must attend the intake appointment. Parents\Guardians are required to attend the intake appointment in order to understand the independent study commitment, role of the parent in independent study and to sign the contract.
